During 2001, Italians purchased 17,250 homes abroad, with an increase of 1.2% compared to 2000, a record year since 1992. Availability is also increasing: in fact the average investment is around 1,146 thousand euros. The data was processed by Scenari Immobiliari based on information from the authorities of different countries and from different operators. Purchases concern only residences, first and second homes, with the exclusion of other destinations. The greatest interest concerns the large Western European capitals and the traditionally most renowned tourist areas. In first place is France with Paris in the lead. In the capital the most requested areas are the Latin quarter, St. German des pres despite the significant increase in prices, and in recently valorised neighborhoods such as Seine Saint Denis and Marne La Valle. The Côte d'Azur is also recovering, where Italian buyers are moving towards lesser-known locations such as Beaulieu and Saint Paul de Vence where the quality offering is more abundant than in prestigious destinations. Finally, interest in other French areas such as the Camargue and Brittany is increasing. Interest in Great Britain is stable where family investments are concentrated in greater London, despite it being by far the most expensive place in Europe. In Switzerland, the effect of the revision of the Friederich law continues to be felt which allows foreigners to buy a house after living in the country for one year compared to the previous five for Europeans and ten for all others. Overseas in the USA, a noticeable decline in interest in New York is counterbalanced by a stable interest in Miami and Florida in general. Interest in Eastern countries is declining sharply, with the exception of Warsaw thanks to the prospects of entry into the EU and exotic destinations. Among the destinations most penalized by the Bin Laden effect are Kenya and Egypt.
