About forty million Americans, equal to 36% of US surfers, have searched for information on the Internet to buy a house, two thirds more than in the year 2000. This is what emerges from research conducted by Pew Internet & American Life Project. The data collected, which has a margin of error of 2%, provides a cross-section of those who used the internet to search for a property. First of all, they seem to be young, the highest percentage, in fact, is recorded among those aged between 18 and 29. Furthermore, these are people who have a rather high level of education, but from different social backgrounds. They also have a rather long experience in browsing: 62%, in fact, have been using the internet for more than three years. Finally, 58% are unmarried and 55% live in the suburbs. The Internet, however, does not seem to replace the figure of the real estate broker. According to research carried out by a group of researchers from Ohio University, in fact, the use of the internet increases the possibilities of contact between real estate agents and buyers, since it is used more as a source of information than as a real tool for transactions.
