The house, a house that can be bought without having to go into debt for decades, remains the "chest dream". For the rest: distrust towards the stock market and towards investment funds and, in general, little desire to spend. This is what emerges from a survey, which anticipates the trends of the next quarter, conducted by Gfk-Sociometria for Il Sole 24 Ore. Based on a sample of people over the age of 24, the survey highlights how "the house always remains in pole position among the economic choices of Italians". In fact, 1% of those interviewed say that in the third quarter of 2002 they intend to buy a house, another 1% plan to do so by December and 3% "maybe" will make a real estate investment in the last 3 months of the year. But the house expresses all its appeal to Italians as a possible additional income (48% of those interviewed choose it), compared to 17% who prefer shares, public securities and funds. In fact, on the financial markets front, the decline in confidence among Italians seems evident. Only 1% listen to the advice of operators, only 6% pay attention to fund managers. And, above all, only 2% still have confidence in the stock market. Among those who, despite the setbacks, do not want to leave the stock market, traditional investors prevail: thus 10% rely on insurance securities and 46% on banking securities. As regards purchases of consumer goods - according to the survey - it is electronics and hi-tech that could drive consumption in the next 3 months: televisions with flat screens, liquid crystals, DVD players, digital video cameras, are among the most popular purchasing desires. And if it is therefore reasonable to expect a Christmas dedicated to ultra-modern gifts, the survey curbs enthusiasm: only 5% of the sample is willing to spend over 500 euros.
