Since 1993, the Province of Bolzano has provided financing to those who observe specific energy saving measures when building a new house or renovating an existing one. «Through this office - explains Petra Seppi, deputy director of the Energy Savings office of the Department of Urban Planning, Environment and Energy - the Province contributes, for example, to 30% of the costs necessary for the installation of solar panels or boilers powered by renewable energy or even heat recovery systems». The objective is to promote sustainability, and in fact in these parts the sensitivity towards this issue is high. This is also demonstrated, explains Petra Seppi, by the participation from all over Italy at the conference organized by the Province a few weeks ago on energy optimization in renovations. The CasaClima project also arouses a lot of interest. Always promoted by the Province, through the Air and Noise office, to reduce energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions, it provides for the certification of new buildings regarding their energy needs and wants, among other things, to make energy costs transparent so that this contributes to the choice of purchasing or renting a home. To prevent ecological sensitivity from prevailing over other equally important ones, such as compliance with the constraints dictated by the Superintendence of Fine Arts for protected buildings, the Province has launched an award dedicated to energy optimization in renovations. 22 projects participated in the last edition, five of which were awarded. Given the success, the initiative will have a new edition, in a period to be defined. PROS AND CONS The Sculpture Festival Appointment from 10 to 14 January in San Candido and from 15 to 17 of the same month in San Vigilio for the 17th International Snow Sculpture Festival. Thirty artists from all over the world are taking part in the event and, equipped with barbed wire, saws and shovels, will have to create works of art in just three days. The artists will work on huge cubes of pressed snow and frozen with water. The sculptures will remain in place until the spring sun melts them. The best works will be judged by tourists and the inhabitants of the two locations. Stop pollution. Fine particles also threaten the quality of mountain air. The deadly particles often exceed the limit values even in unsuspected places. Therefore, in Bolzano and in 15 other South Tyrolean municipalities, a traffic limitation plan is in force from 2 November 2006 to 30 March 2007 which prohibits the circulation of Euro 0 and non-catalysed vehicles from Monday to Friday (7am - 10am and 4pm - 7pm), excluding public holidays. In Val Pusteria the municipalities involved are Brunico and San Lorenzo di Sebato. An exemption is provided for the vehicles of tourists staying in accommodation facilities, even if only on arrival and departure
